Rocks & Minerals - Fossil - Sea Lily "Crinoid" Stems

_________________________________________

Sea Lilies" or "Feather Stats" or the technical term Apiocrinites crinoid pluricolumnals.  Our stems and matrix were collected in South Central Kentucky and believed to be from the late Paleozioic Period (42-251 million years ago).  They were among the most primitive and accent of the ocean invertebrate.

These fossils were used in the Bronze Age as beads.  In Germany, they were know as Bonifacius Pfennige or "St. Boniface's Pennies" and were used as "Fairy Money" believed to entice fairies to an area to bring them prosperity.  In England, they have been known since the 17th Century as "St. Cuthbert's Beads."    In New England and other areas, Indians commonly called the "Indian Money" because they looked like wampum beads.  Crinoids are the state fossil of Missouri.

Today, we enjoy them for collector's specimens, charms, jewelry and art projects.  (From the D.R. March Collection, 2014)
